A distance degree is only worth having if it is recognised. These are the questions we answer before you pay any fee.
- Is the university recognised?Recognised by UGC, and for open schooling, the board is recognised.
- Is this programme approved in this mode?Approved by the UGC Distance Education Bureau for distance or online mode, for this academic year.
- Can the university enrol you?Some universities can only admit learners from certain regions for distance programmes.
- How and where are exams held?Exam centres, online proctoring and schedules.
- What are the full fees?Programme, exam and other fees, and the refund policy.
Common questions
Is a distance or online degree valid?
Yes, when it comes from a university that is recognised and approved to offer that programme in distance or online mode. Under UGC regulations, degrees earned through approved open and distance learning (ODL) and online programmes are treated as equivalent to degrees from regular programmes. We help you check the approval before you enrol.
Do I need to attend classes?
There are no daily classes. You study from home with study material and online resources. Some universities hold optional or short contact sessions, and exams are held at exam centres or online, depending on the university and programme.
Can I complete Class 10 or Class 12 without going to school?
Yes. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and state open schools offer Secondary (Class 10) and Senior Secondary (Class 12) courses for learners who left school, are working, or need flexibility. We guide you through eligibility, subject choice and admission.
Which courses cannot be done through distance education?
Programmes regulated by professional councils, such as engineering, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, architecture and law, are generally not offered in distance or online mode. We tell you honestly when a course you want needs regular study.
Can I study while working, or while living abroad?
Yes. Most of our distance learners are working, and many online programmes can be followed from anywhere. For learners abroad we check whether the university accepts international or NRI students and how its exams are conducted.
How do I check that a university is approved?
The UGC Distance Education Bureau publishes the list of institutions and programmes approved for ODL and online mode each academic year at deb.ugc.ac.in. We walk you through the listing for the university and programme you choose.
Approvals and rules are set by UGC, the Distance Education Bureau, universities and open schooling boards, and can change each academic year. We confirm the current position for your programme.
